A mission to simplify accessible dog training for the people of Coventry.

My story.

From an early age, I've always had an affinity with animals, and dogs in particular. This was often at odds with my upbringing and I never really felt I had enough contact with animals for my liking. When it came time to thinking about my further education, I decided persuing a career with animals would be perfect.

During my college education, which was broad spectrum in terms of animal management (covering everything from agricultual animals, to reptiles), I took the opportunity to complete the separate OCN qualification in dog training and behaviour. It was at this point that I knew I wanted my career to be dog-focused. Building a rapport with a dog and seeing them become happier and more confident with my efforts, was incredibly rewarding.

From college, I decided to leave education and get some good work experience, starting off working at boarding kennels. This was a demanding role and extremely busy, but the dogs got me through the days with their constantly upbeat characters. This is something I've come to realise dogs are amazing at - the ability to lift the spirits of the people around them.

I then went into rescue kennels, where I learnt so much about how dogs can be affected by their circumstances. Working with dogs displaying fear, aggression, stress and all manner of behavioural issues, fascinated me and really honed my interest in dog psychology. I loved those dogs, even the ones who would bite me, and nothing has been more rewarding in my time than finding the perfect home for them. I also rehomed my first dog from there, a German Shepherd, named Penny. She changed my life in such a profound way over the 10 years we spent together. She had plenty of her own issues, but with time, she became a well-adjusted girl who made me proud just by exisiting. Penny got me through some of the darkest days.

From there, I went into working with disability assistance dogs, which I did for many years. Here, I learnt how genetics can impact on a dog's temperament, and also completed a Chester University qualification in training assistance dogs. The things dogs are capable of with a little bit of direction and encouragement, is mind blowing.

So with all this, I decided to put my skills to better use and set up Simple Manners Dog Training. Coventry has so many dogs, many of whom are dealing with their own challenges and I know dog owners can get very stressed, and even feel shame when their dog isn't behaving in a socially acceptable way. I intend to take the stress and shame out of your life with your dog - it's not your fault, and it's not your dog's fault. With lots of effort, we can help improve your lives and you'll be so glad you decided to work with me.
